Plymouth Town Hall Meeting 2-6-16For those of you that missed the Vision Meetings in Argos and Culver, there is another opportunity to attend and voice your opinion.  A third Town Hall Meeting is being held in Plymouth this Saturday.  See the flyer to the right.  I have also included the text of a press release MCEDC is sending out to the local media below.

This is an important topic as we make decisions on how to move Marshall County forward.  I hope to see you there!

Press Release

Plymouth, IN (February 3, 2016) – The Marshall County Economic Development Corporation (MCEDC) will be holding a Town Hall meeting at the Plymouth Council Chambers this Saturday, February 6th at 10am. The meeting will address the Marshall County Vision, an effort supported by community leaders and a citizen’s group of 120 members and growing whose goal is to improve the quality of life of all Marshall County residents.

The Marshall County Vision is an initiative aimed at raising awareness of the needs that our community faces and building consensus on the ways in which we can securing funding and implement long-term development plans to meet these needs. Specifically, the long-term plans proposed by the initiative will require $27 MM in funding for community development and $52 MM for county-wide roadwork. These funds will be used to extend the Metronet, improve infrastructure, create more affordable housing, increase workforce development efforts, and repair and maintain 911 miles of road in Marshall County.

Since the Vision initiative began last summer, MCEDC has presented it to elected officials and at 7 service organizations across the county, as well as Town Hall meetings in Bourbon, Argos, and Culver. These meetings have resulted in greater support for the Vision initiative, and we hope the upcoming Plymouth Town Hall meeting will do the same. More importantly however, these meetings have given community members a chance to voice their opinions and build consensus on the development plans which will impact our county’s future.

According to MCEDC President/CEO, Jerry Chavez, Marshall County already has the tools necessary to secure funding to improve our community, we just need to implement them. He states, “No one else is going to help Marshall County, we have to help ourselves. That’s what the Marshall County Vision is all about.”

All Plymouth residents are encouraged to come to the meeting and learn how they can make Marshall County a better place to live and work for years to come. For more information, please contact Jerry Chavez, President/CEO, at (574) 935-8499.

IU Housing Report says Sales Up

I ran across this on twitter posted from the IBJ (Indianapolis Business Journal):  IU researchers say 2015 is banner year for housing sales  “Home sales across the state increased more than 6 percent in the one-year stretch ending June 2015 compared with the previous 12 months.  In fact, buyer demand proved so strong this summer that Hoosiers bought 9,080 existing homes in June alone—the state’s second-largest one-month sales tally in the past 12 years, according to the study.”  Unfortunately, as one of the commenters states, it the data looks like it was a banner year for real estate agents, not necessarily home builders…

Granted, it is mainly talking about Indy, but some of the information is salient to the housing conversation in Culver as well.

I need to write a follow up on the BZA meeting last Thursday, but there hasn’t been enough time for me to get my thoughts in order.  Suffice to say for now that it was interesting.

Qwerty Revisited

Last year I wrote a post (here) on QWERTY keyboards and why I thought we were taking a step back with two finger tying on iPads and their ilk.  For anyone intrigued by the birth and widespread adoption of the QWERTY keyboard, I ran across an in depth article at discovermagazine.com called “The Curse of QWERTY” that you can read here.

Extended Territorial Boundary

Culver’s Current Zoning Boundary in pink with the approximate 2-mile limit shown in the outer ring.

When I was driving down Hwy 117 the other day I noticed that Mystic Hills has added a couple of new buildings that I’m guessing are rental cabins.  I’m glad they are doing well, but I was a bit surprised to see them as I hadn’t remembered any discussion regarding a site plan revision at the Culver Plan Commission.  I wasn’t sure how the mixed use had been approved.  Then I remembered…  Mystic Hills is outside Culver’s Zoning Boundary.

It’s unfortunate, but the Plan Commission members (and me!) were fairly disheartened by the Town Council’s decision to overrule them on the wind turbine ordinance.  Rightly so, they believe that this probably killed any chances of extending our territorial authority.

Marshall County Entry Level Housing Meeting

I sit on the Affordable Housing Task Force for Culver and as part of that as well as wearing my MCEDC hat, I sat in on a meeting at the Culver Library with Darin Edwards, Underwriting and Closing Manager for IHCDA.  The meeting was arranged by Jerry Chavez, MCEDC Executive Director, and included representatives from the Marshall County communities of Culver, Argos, Plymouth and Bremen.
