Tony Bennett

Dr. Tony Bennett
State Superintendent

I had the opportunity to hear State Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Tony Bennett, speak last week at the State Board meeting of Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) in Indianapolis.  It was interesting to hear the changes that he and Governor Daniels have made in the Indiana school systems over the past few years.  While it had a campaign speech theme, I was pleased and impressed with a lot of the questions and answers that followed.  Through my association with the Marshall County Economic Development Corporation, MCEDC, I constantly hear that educating the workforce is the number one request from the business community.  Dr. Bennett said that graduation rates are up 4%, and 10% more students are participating in Advanced Placement in preparation for college from 2009 to 2011.

As it affects our industry, I was more interested in how schools can earn credit for vocational education.  This has long been a frustration of mine.  I’ve often felt that high schools have divided the students into two tracks, 1) College Prep and 2) High School Graduation.  Track 1 kids are prepared for higher learning and are made to understand that high school is just a step along the way.  Less than three months after high school graduation they will be back in school and expected to continue their career path education.  Track 2 kids are given the goal of getting their high school diploma.  I feel that it often hasn’t been explained to them that they will still be expected to “learn” in order to make whatever job they take into a career.  Kids that we hire are often shocked and almost offended that we would suggest that they need to participate in Apprenticeship programs and continue their education in order to advance with our company.

For years now, ABC has offered a program to our schools that allows high school students participating in the Building Trades programs to earn their first year of apprenticeship.  The program is Bureau of Apprenticeship Training (BAT) approved, meaning that they could continue their training through union or merit shop training after graduation.  I think this accomplishes a three things:  1)  It fosters the idea that construction workers need to be educated in order to make their job a career.  2)  It gives the students a leg-up on the competition when they enter the job market.  3)  It elevates a graduate’s pay potential.  (They would still need to complete On the Job Training (OJT’s) hours to complete their first year, but the programs are set up with graduated pay increases with each year of apprenticeship successfully completed.  At Easterday Construction, we generally require a year of service before we would consider sending someone to Apprenticeship Training, but if someone came out of a high school building trades program with a year of apprenticeship under their belt, I would seriously consider sending them for year two the following Fall.)  I have approached the Culver and Plymouth Schools regarding this opportunity in the past and I have been rebuffed.  Hopefully they will reconsider this in the future since it would now count favorably in the school’s overall assessment by the State.

All in all, I was impressed with Dr. Bennett and the programs he has put into place.  I think Indiana could do worse than giving Dr. Bennett another term to further his programs and give the ones currently implemented a chance to bear fruit.

Butler Manufacturing Company SunLite Strip

We have always promoted Butler Manufacturing Company’s (BMCMR-24 Roof System for new commercial buildings as well as large reroof projects.  In Culver we have installed this roof on the Edgewater Grille (now Lakehouse Grille), the Culver Ambulance Garage and part of the Culver Street Department Facility.  In Plymouth we have installed this on the Grace Baptist School, the Boys & Girls Club Gym, the Marshall County Highway Department Garage, Pioneer Auto as well as others.  We’ve installed this roof throughout the region with excellent results.  We’ve been pleased with the Pittsburgh double-lock standing seam that is used to make the panels weathertight.  (See GIF at right)  BMC now has a Sunlite Strip Daylighting System for use with MR-24 roofs.  It can be retrofitted to existing roofs as well as included in new construction.

Daylighting has become one of the “Green” initiatives, allowing natural light to be brought into buildings.  The new systems harvest natural light in a much more efficient manner than traditional skylights and the old translucent panels that were often installed on metal buildings.  The raised profile is also safer, since it is visible when walking the roof on a day when the roof is snow covered, or the panels are otherwise obscured by roof debris.

BMC has also created a program called SunLite Calc which allows modeling of different levels of daylight.  The program then generates simple payback calculations to determine if the system is right for your facility.  Let us know if you are interested in discussing these options for your facility.  With the Sunlite Calc we can help you determine if this is “Green that Saves Green“.

MCEDC, Social Media and Just Being Awesome!

One of my ToDo List items as Chairman of Marshall County Economic Development Corporation (MCEDC) was to see a new website up and running and get MCEDC tied into some of the social media outlets.  Thanks to Jennifer, Derek and Pam, this is one I can strike off my list.  (The benefits of Chairing organizations is that you can direct other people to do things and then take credit for their hard work.  Thanks guys!)  If you haven’t visited the new website, you can do so here.  It takes most of the good things from the old site and has added some functionality.  Some of these originated internally and some were the result of our work with Ady Voltedge on our marketing plan.

The website has been up since the first quarter of this year.  In the past month, Derek has added the social media connections.  MCEDC is now posting to Facebook, Linkedin and Twitter.  You can go to the MCEDC home page and there are a couple of places with the connection buttons for these services.  Visit the site!  More clicks there help our SEO (Search Engine Optimization) ratings and that could mean the difference in attracting new business to Marshall County.  If you Google it to find it, that helps even more…

Easterday Construction Co., Inc. is once again participating in Red Shirt Fridays this summer to show our support for our troops.  The field crews reinstated this on their own this year.  We’re happy to support them with new shirts as they need them.

The pictures herein show John Singleton and Murgurel Stephan in their red shirts at our Deborah Road remodel project.  They’re installing siding as we prepare to wrap up this project.  Dave Epley (not shown) was also on site in his red shirt today  Thanks guys!  Way to go!

Any past or current clients that would like a shirt to show your support, stop by our office and we’ll hook you up.  Support the Troops!

Energizing Indiana Seminar

I attended an Energizing Indiana Seminar on Tuesday in South Bend presented by the Indiana Energy Association.  In our area, the partners that we work with are NIPSCO and AEP(Marshall County REMC has programs as well, but opted out of IURC (Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission) due to what they felt were onerous reporting and oversight requirements and the associated costs.)  There are quite a few incentive programs available to businesses and residential customers as well.  Unlike some of the tax incentive programs such as EPAct, these programs provide checks directly from the Utility Companies which means municipalities and other tax exempt entities should be able to take advantage of them as well.

Many of these programs encourage renovations that will pay savings dividends on their own.  (Green That Saves Green!)  The incentives are there to give the extra kick to encourage implementing them now.   I am planning on researching this further and I will include details here, but if you’re interested in pursuing this, please contact us and we can look into your specific situation now!
