Wind Farms Around Culver

Paul Dockery of NEXTera has been making the rounds promoting Wind Farms in general and specifically the possibility of a NEXTera Wind Farm to the South and East of Lake Maxinuckee in Marshall and Fulton Counties.  I have heard his presentations to the Marshall County Economic Development Corporation and to the Lake Maxinkuckee Environmental Council.  All the presentations have been positively received and it is clear that Mr. Dockery believes in his product.

There are many issues out there regarding Wind Farms ranging from complaints regarding sound, shadow flicker and visual clutter.  Mr. Dockery addresses these in his presentations, though there are obviously people that still have concerns.  There was an article in the Pilot News (below) concerning a presentation by the Purdue Extension service regarding Wind Farms tomorrow night.  I thought it was worth putting it out here for those that might be interested in sitting in and listening to what should be a dispassionate discussion on the issue.

I don’t have a strong opinion on Wind Farms.  I have been to visit them and have not found them overly objectionable.  I didn’t get heart palpitations, hearing loss or suffer an epileptic seizure.  That’s not to say my few minutes of exposure in any way relates to what someone living next door may experience.  My concern is that these fairly benign installations are being attacked by the NIMBY crowd which often wants to see nothing change.

Their concerns should be evaluated.  If our Zoning Ordinance does not adequately address the issue, it should be revisited.  We can’t be against everything though…  Can we?  I’m rather fond of electricity.

Culver Garden Court Start-up

Culver Garden Court had a project closing yesterday at the HUD offices in Indianapolis.  FINALLY!!! The closing for this project was similar to a closing on a house where the mortgage is finalized, the previous property owner receives a check and the ownership transfer is made.  In addition to this, the HUD closing for this project included the finalization of contracts for the construction of the new Garden Court facility.  I was back in the office about 4:30 yesterday afternoon and the first round of purchase orders were sent releasing the surveyor, excavator and concrete contractor to begin work.

Culver Garden Court Site Plan

HUD requires the project to break ground within 10 days.  This should not be a problem at this time of year.  Everyone has been waiting for this project to be released for months.  There will be a separate ground breaking ceremony on April 8th at 2:00pm for anyone interested in attending.  Odds are there will be actual construction going on in the background at that time too.

The project has a 12 month time line.  We anticipate being out of the ground within a couple of months.  We should be weathered in before winter allowing interior finishes to be completed regardless of the weather.

Construction Whodunnit

A workman was killed at a construction site.  The police began questioning a number of the other workers.

Based upon past brushes with the law, many of these workers were considered prime suspects.  They were a motley crew:

The electrician was suspected of wiretapping once but was never charged.

The carpenter thought he was a stud.  He tried to frame another man one time.

The glazier went to great panes to conceal his past.  he still claims that he didn’t do anything; that he was framed.

The painter had a brush with the law several years ago.

The heating, ventilation and air conditioning contractor was known to pack heat.  He was arrested once but duct the charges.

The mason was a suspect because he gets stoned regularly.

The cabinet maker is an accomplished counter fitter.

The autopsy led the police to arrest the carpenter, who subsequently confessed.  The evidence against him was irrefutable, because it was found that the workman, when he died, was hammered.

These horrible puns were sent to me by Electrical Staffing in their quarterly newsletter, Current News.

Happy Evacuation Day!

St. Patrick’s Day isn’t the only holiday being celebrated today.  There are a few people around Boston, MA celebrating the day the British troops evacuated during the Revolutionary War.  Since 1901 March 17th has been an official holiday, Evacuation Day, in Suffolk County.  It is celebrated in several other cities on the east coast on different days based on the day the British army left those areas.

Wonder what color beer they’re drinking…
